Hingolgadh Sanctuary Located in Jasdan Taluka of Rajkot District,  is a green oasis in the dry plateau of Saurashtra. The Sanctuary is just 180 kms. away from Ahmedabad.

surrounded by rain fed parched land from all sides, this small wildlife sanctuary of “Hingolgadh” is a preferred habitat for Chinkara, blue bull and a very large number of resident and migratory birds. This sanctuary has a special ecological significance as the dry deciduous thorny forests and savannah type grasslands merge here. It plays a crucial role in the ground water conservation by recharging aquifers in the region. Declared as a sanctuary in 1980, the area has a high educational and recreational value.

The sanctuary is managed by Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation. Around 50-100 Nature Education Camps are organized by the Foundation every year during the monsoon season. The participants are generally school children & enthusiasms photographers.

Unlike very few Wildlife sanctuaries in Gujarat India, Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary organizes camps to create awareness amongst the local people, and tourists in general, about wildlife, its preservation, and environmental studies. The authorities are trying to strike a balance with environment and the whole eco system of the place at large. The topography is partly undulating and partly wastelands. Gujarat Ecological and Education research work has contributed a lot in the way of continuously mapping the progress of this sanctuary, undertaking major tree plantation projects and breeding of the natural habitats in the sanctuary.

Hingolgadh Nature Education Sanctuary houses animals like the Chinkara, Leopard, Flying fox, Hyena and Wolf to name a few. The rich avian life in the sanctuary is also worth considering. This is the natural habitat of many species of woodpeckers, bulbuls, bablers etc. So if you are a bird watcher and in perfect sync with nature, this is the place you should be heading to.

~Things to do~

A visit to Hingolgadh Sanctuary is strongly recommended particularly during the rainy season when the scenic beauty is at its aesthetic best. However, the winter season is also a very good and pleasant time for visiting the sanctuary. The sanctuary provides limited lodging facilities for which prior permission and booking are necessary from the Range Forest Officer, Hingolgadh Wildlife Sanctuary. Pre book the camping facility in the sanctuary to learn and discover the varied mysteries of nature. The nature education sanctuary is known for the nature camps extending for 3 days and 2 nights being held amidst the glorifying treasure of nature.
